Her Grace Patricia Iona Duchess of Argyll

Born on the 16th of January 1953 in a rather dank and forbidding castle on the Isle of Coll In the province of Argyll I was raised in a farming community. My mother, giving birth at home, and with the local District Nurse in attendance, She gazed out of the bedroom window at the Isle of Iona, that on a clear day, could be quite clearly seen.
I therefore was named Patricia Iona. Another reason being, was that
a distant relatives daughter was also Iona. Life on the island was never dull, and the island was surrounded by beautiful white or golden sands.
The island was surrounded by the warm waters of the Gulf Stream,
and due to this had extremely mild weather all year round.
As a child we had on the island all such things as would be needed to keep ourselves and the other children of the island occupied. As the island was only seven miles long and only three miles at its widest. Our parents had no fear of our ever getting lost. Perhaps the only dangers that existed, were the peat bogs and the two small lochs on the island. However most of the children on the island had learned to swim before they were six years old.
My father was in the Royal Air Force and because of that we were often travelling to far off and interesting destinations. Mother also travelled quite a lot, and due to this fact in 1957 I eventually found my way to boarding school at The Mount in York. This is where I learned to perfect my English, as I had been raised in a Gaelic community. I constantly hear that it is a dying tongue, but on the isles, it is alive, kicking and making a comeback.
I can still remember vividly that all the other girls in school were fascinated by the sound, and would join me to listen records of people like Flora McNeil singing melodies from the isles.
Upon leaving school I immediately began a career in nursing with The Princess Mary's Royal Air Force Nursing Service. In 1969 I remustered into the Royal Australian Army Nursing Corps. And my first year in Australia saw me working and training as a nurse, with a year spent overseas. This is where I got to know and love Americans
In 1975 tragedy struck when my mother and father died in an Automobile accident. This caused my brother to gain the Family Title. I took a sabatical from the Army and went home to assist in winding up my parents affairs. And this was done in about 11 months. Just before I was to return to Australia though, tragedy struck again, when my brother, a Police Officer was also killed in a car accident. He had been chasing some felons when the car he was driving collided with a lamp standard and he was killed .
When I returned to Australia I rejoined the Army and continued my nursing Career, until I retired in 1993. I was discharged due to illness and spent two years fighting the cancer, and beat it.In 1993 my Grandmother passed away and I was afforded the honor of her title, as there were no other heirs left. Thus I became the Duchess of Argyll of Coll and Nova Scotia.
I was devestated, and after contacting the Army and explaining what had happened stayed in Britain until 1980. During this period I took the oppurtunity to travel around Europe. I spent two years in Germany and worked in an hotel for awhile.
I became interested in in computers in the Army and subsequently carried this interest on in civilian life, as you see today. Also in our geneaology A copy of my family tree is shown below for you to see.
