comments=Hi, I have never served so I hope that i can post here. My Father served, WW2 in the British Armed Forces and Korea for the Australian Armed Forces. In Korea he was in A Company 1st Platoon 1st Battalion. I will not go in to his time in either WW2 or Korea, not because I am not proud of him because i am. But because he never spoke of it, and never wanted to do so. I would not go against his wishes, for whatever reasons he had, he did not want to speak of war in any way. I have found over the years that this is not uncommon, we could never understand what our Fathers and Grandfahters etc went through, and thanks to men and women like them, we will most likely never have to learn. I have been disgusted by the people on your site, Mother Nature does many things to alert us to danger. It would be nice to think that she could have some kind of stench ooz from people like this so that the rest of us know they are coming and get out of thier way. How could anyone do this to gain notice or pitty. I am not as concerned with the money they might gain from the Govenement as much as the disgust that i have for the true crime they are guilty of. Brotherhood is something that all of our REAL heros share, that is the crime, these people are inserting themselves into the Brotherhood of our heros and it makes me sick. Good job guys, never let them sleep, never allow them to walk more than 50 witout looking over their shoulders Give them nightmares that wake them in the night, show them no mercy. Eddie

Whether these individuals commit these offences against genuine vets out of malice, low self esteem or personal gain is irrelevant.
They devalue the worth of the sacrifice, commitment and efforts made by all Service personnel and create suspicion amongst and against the "grey men" of the ex  service community as well as the general public.
Their "excuses" and "apologies" are as worthless and hollow as their lies.
I have knowledge of a local "Nam Vet" (with the obligatory SAS credentials of course). When asked BASIC questions about Service life, SOPS or weapons, this individual spouts complete crap or takes the "Official Secrets" defence.
Rest assured, when I gather more info in this person I will submit it all to ANZMI for investigation.
Keep up the great work gents

Keep up the good work, expose these frauds.
You have 110% support from me.
I am the son of an Air Man turned Soldier, a Viet Nam Veteran, he was the son of a WWII RAAF  (Pacific) Vet, and my grand fathers were the sons of  AIF (Light Horse and Infantry), WWI vets. Members of my parents families served in various capacities in the Boer War, WWI, II and Viet Nam. My Mother had her uncles, 5 brothers, in WWI four of them at Gallipoli.
Our family has a long, proud  military history of serving our country, in uniform. None of us attained high rank or  great status, but we did the job that was required of us, and have received legitimate recognition for our service.
It really "cheeses" me off when I hear of these fraudsters claiming to have done a job that they probably only dreamed about!

G'day. Some more info on this lying ratbag. During his initial training as an Aircraft Plotter at No 2 control & Reporting Unit, one of his well known stunts, was to drive around Darwin, on a motor bike wearing his drab uniform and pretending he was a NT policeman. I will never know why the NT Police never picked him up and threw the book at him. We got rid of him very quickly out of the Air Defence system. He tried to get himself back into the Ex Air defence Radar Group, but we were a wake up to his lying, and deleted him  from contacting our group.

I am not an ex serviceman, but my father and grandfather were (my father in Z in WW2 and my grandfather in France in WW1, as well as serving in ww2)and that is something our family is very proud of. Both were, and my father continues to be, reluctant to talk at any length about their service. On the occasions they have spoken it has been with  a great deal of emotion around many of the stories that emerge. To pretend to have gone through this hell is pathetic. Well Done ANZMI,
have read every word of your website and was just amazed at some of the phoney characters u have uncovered.
Am just amazed and blown away that some people would want to bullshit like this, but then I guess they carried on like this in "civy life", shoplifting, cheating at golf, lying to the boss
etc ,etc.
My old man is 87 next week was conscripted at 18 in 1942, finaly went overseas to Bougainville in Jan 1945 as an advanced field workshop mechanic.
Never heard a shot fired.
Guarded the Jap prisoners in Rabaul for about 12 months after the war.
Came home with three gongs and very bad malaria.
The three  gongs have grown to 5 gongs  now ,due to criteria changes.
You know what !
He has never been to an RSL club, never marched at ANZAC day, never even worn his gongs once in public.
I think he is still to shit scared someone will ask him what he did n the war.
Because he would have to say "I repaired ambulances".
Could be wrong , but he wont give me any explanations.
I mean at 87 he could make up any old horseshit about the Pacific War.
But, when u consider these arseholes u have uncovered , it makes him stand ten feet taller than all of them.
regards  and keep up the good work.

I appreciate the work you are doing.  However, I feel the flashing and somewhat gaudy signs on your website tend to cheapen the display and take away the dignity and conservative approach that is evident in your write-ups.

To the investigators,

The ANZMI site is an impressive and very important site but also very sad.
My grandfather John William Dier served as a private during WW1 in Europe. I remember as a child (50 years ago) his wife glorified his standard three medals by mounting them on a dresser, surrounded by the Australian and British flags and a load of paraphernalia.
A day or two after her death he discarded the presentation.
He never spoke to me about the war although my mother told me two stories. One one being dragged out of mud by his companions when he slipped and nearly drowned in the fetid slop. The other was when he was given a minor promotion just before a major battle. Before he got back to his companions he saw them leave the trench from afar. He watched them all being killed by machine gun fire.
After the war he regularly attended the Cheltenham RSL in Adelaide. He wore his RSL badge everywhere and marched every year with his three medals.
He rarely spoke to me but one day when I was playing with some toy destroyers on the carpet in front of him, he asked me how much I paid for them. I replied sixpence. He reached into his trouser fob pocket, withdrew sixpence and tossed it to me saying, 'Go and buy something else!'
Needless to say he probably carried the pains of WW1 until he died (ironically, hit by a taxi whilst crossing to the Cheltenham RSL at night). However, to my knowledge he rarely spoke about the war to anyone; and only rarely let on that his experience was horrific. His story of service is at the other end of your site's focus but I am sure he would have been horrified to think that leaches and parasites like the people you have exposed exist; seemingly oblivious to the real trauma others have gone through and live with. Such shallow, shallow people.
Thank you for your good work. Your site not only makes amends to the elite service personnel but also the humble privates and others.

I just came across your website today. I was shocked! I had no idea there were so many people doing this. I am a defence spouse and my husband is a REAL returned serviceman. As a AAFC Officer I also worked with David Bain when he was working in the National Training Team and he regualarly held centre stage in the O's Mess talking about his exploits in the RAAF and secondment to the USAF. Now this doesn't surprise me as he apparently had an Adult Education degree with many years of experience (that started in the Air Force as a chopter pilot trainer). As an experienced trainer with an Adult Training Degree I just couldn't grasp many of his concepts or direction, and clashed several times over this. Now it makes sense, he really had no idea.

The ship on one of the trips was found to have a floating mine/satchel mine wrapped around the anchor chain. This was releasd by the ships diving team and towed away by one of the ships boats. Terry was on the Sydney during many of those trips as the Army liason Kellick in 4 Bravo mess. I served with him again on either Stuart or Swan in the mid 80's from memory.

states that the GSM1962 was awarded only to a few veterans who served
in SVN in the early days, in fact all those who served in Malaysia and
Borneo in the period 1964-66 were also awarded the GSM1962, the most
common bars being Malay Peninsula and Borneo, meaning all those in 3
RAR, 4 RAR, some SAS troopers,  and the troops of RAE sappers, were
awarded that medal, possibly in excess of 2000 Australian soldiers

he served with 6 RAR before going to Malaya/Borneo.  If he actually
served in the Malaysian region from 1964 to 1967 (as implied in the

raised until June 1965.

comments=Gents,

I am writing to commend you on the brilliant work you have so obviously
undertaken in the interests of Defence personnel everywhere. I am a former
serving member and current active reservist (Reg No 1103287 and PMkeys
826173) and I have stopped attending ANZAC day parades save for the dawn
service, in part as a consequence of the many d***h**ds that I constantly
see and hear swaggering around on that somber occasion, relating their war
adventures to any and all who will listen in drunken (apparent) recollection
of the horrors of war. I find it distasteful and utterly disrespectful to
the men and women who have served this great country honourably and quietly.
After perusing your site I now question the occasion even more and wonder
how many of those stories really are little more than make believe . It
seems to me that the true 'Vets' are more likely to be the quiet ones, who
say nothing to anyone, mark the occasion with notable silence and their own
personal salute to those who didn't return home. I for one no longer even
attend the dawn service at my own unit, choosing instead the local public
service, for similar reasons (not being able to handle all the egos, tears
and sob stories there) and after being pointed in the direction of your
website by a number of my colleagues am doubly appalled at the number of
former members of my unit who I have until now believed to be bone-fide past
members of the organization. I am fast losing sight of the purpose of ANZAC
day, veterans associations, and the department of Veterans Affairs and have
already lost all faith in the significance of military awards and
decorations. This has been further exacerbated by the influx of a new
generation of war veterans and I fear the work load of your volunteers will
only magnify in the coming years following on from recent conflicts. With
that in mind and for what it is worth I, as an individual wanted to offer a
heartfelt thank you for what you continue to do, quietly and behind the
scenes. Well bloody done!

Best regards,

Rich Hungerford

I remember outing a guy at my RSA in Silverdale NZ when he was regaling everyone with his exploits as a sniper. A few well chosen questions saw him scuttle out the door with his tail between his legs. I never realised how much of a problem this was and how widespread. I've seen a couple of Kiwi's in the line up but not many. Is this because we were a volunteer force or have I not read enough of the files about these abhorrent wankers!! I never would have guessed the prevalence of fraudulent claims of military service and military valour to be so great! As we had no involvement in Vietnam, other than a small monitoring team at the very end, we are yet largely devoid of such cranks here. I commend you for your work, and perhaps we will have to watch out for his phenomena here, as a result of our involvement in Afghanistan, in the years to come. Cheers to Australia and New Zealand - our brothers in arms from another time and place (08 Aug 18) and the Australian Electrical and Mechanical Boring Company (or semblance thereof) who lit all the subways at Vimy prior to 09 Apr 17.

comments=Thanks for this site - I have just been made aware of it by a
former military colleague. Re: Owen Michael Evans (now 'Eather'
following his mother's remarriage to Maj Gen Eather from WW2 fame). I
was the Administrative Officer of Headquarters 26 Company RAASC (GT) at
the Task Force Maintenance Area (TFMA) at Luscombe Field, Nui Dat, South
Vietnam from 18 Dec 67 to 19 DEc 68. At that time 'Evans' was serving as
second in command of 85 Transport Platoon to Officer Commanding Captain
Jack Humphrey, subsequently repaced by Captain Ron Sherman). Evans
arrived in theatre prior to me and left before me. During my time Evans
did form a strong friendship with several pilots in Detachment 161 Recce
Flight (Lt John Spoor in particular). At that time (late 67 early 68) we
were living in the TFMA tent area but eating in the Recce Flight mess
facilities - hence the strong bond. During my period of service in South
Vietnam Evans (Eather) did in fact go on several Recce Flights as an
'observer' in the hope of some sort of 'observer' status. To the best of
my recollection Evans did go to at least one Fire Support Base (FSB) but
I'm not sure which - possibly Coral. However, and I want to make this
very clear, at no time was I ever aware of any 'heroic' actions with our
forces or the US Army and cettainly no 'citations' or even the remotest
indication of such. In fact I do not recall any period in which Evans
was even detached to, or served with, US forces in theatre. As the
Administrative Officer for the TFMA I was certainly 'on top' of any such
such matters. On the only occasion our unit served with the US forces I
was the only junior Officer to go to Bear Cat (near Long Binh) for two
weeks, later joined by the Officer Commanding, Major Geoff
Christopherson. Evans did not serve in this area or any other area than
the 1st Task Force (1 ATF) Area of Operations (AO). I hope this
background is of some help. I last saw 'Eather' in Brisbane at a
military funeral about six years ago and he was not wearing medals. (By
the way, I coined the term at the time of his name change to 'Good Evans
it's Eather!).
Cheers, Tony Holmes (54952).
